The Importance of a Good Web Hosting Company
Filed Under Internet
When I set up my professional website for the first time, I had no idea how important it was to get a good web hosting provider — or how much providers could vary in the quality and service they provided.
So when I first set up my website, I was using a “free” hosting provider. I put free in quotes because they actually upsold you on virtually everything they could. Domain name registration cost $25 a year instead of $10 or less like most places. Also the maximum storage and bandwidth on the free accounts were minimal, and to purchase more was ridiculously expensive.
On top of it all, their email servers were blacklisted as spammers while I was with them, so my email was all getting sent to my clients’ junk mail folders, or even rejected outright. Not a good thing when you own a business and said business is dependent on your communication getting through.
After a year and some change, I decided it was time to transfer to a different (read: better) hosting company. I easily found one where I had a fancy hosting package that cost less than just the extra storage and bandwidth I was buying from the other provider. And if I want to upgrade to anything, such as dedicated hosting or another business hosting option, the pricing is still very reasonable.
This story ought to demonstrate how important it is to find a good web hosting provider from the beginning. Don’t settle for less, or sign up with a questionable company just because the services are “free.” Believe me, you’ll pay in other ways, whether that is overpriced peripheral services or crappy quality that threatens the success of your business.
